Thermoplastic - Fosshape 400 ®
Often called the 'buckram replacement', this unique felt-like fabric that is heat activated to achieve rigidity, stiffness and surface enhancement without the use of water or messy additives. Synthetic FOSSHAPE can easily be cut with scissors, will not fray like conventional woven fabrics and can easily be readily sewn to itself or other fabrics as a hidden stiffener or shaped into standalone structures. When heated the material will shrink and become stiffer and smoother, and once cooled it retains its rigid molded shape.
Fabric steamers are the often preferred method for forming a desired amount of rigidity and stiffness, but conventional steam irons or an industrial hot air gun. The level of stiffness is achieved by adjusting heat, time and pressure. Re-heating will not restore its original condition and overheating may result in burning.
Applications include: millinery head pieces, costuming, lightweight craft reinforcement, theatre props and set design, craft work, taxidermy, puppetry, masks, sculptures, museum mount making and more.
